If you’re planning your wedding and already feeling nervous about being in front of the camera, I promise you’re not the only one. One of the most common things couples tell me before their wedding is:

“We’re awkward in photos.”, “We don’t know what to do.”, “We’re not very natural in front of a camera.” Honestly? Most people feel like that!

Very few couples book their wedding photographer because they love posing for photos all day. Most just want their wedding captured naturally without feeling like they’re spending the whole day in a photoshoot.

That’s exactly why so many couples look for a Cambridge wedding photographer like me who takes a more natural approach.

Natural wedding photography is much less about stiff posing and perfect performances, and much more about documenting the real atmosphere of the day as it actually happens. The laughs during speeches, your mates losing it on the dance floor, your mum fixing your outfit before the ceremony, the moments together when everything finally sinks in… those are usually the moments people care about most afterwards.

So if you’re wondering what to expect from a Cambridge wedding photographer who takes a natural approach to photography and videography, here’s what you can realistically expect from me.

A Relaxed Experience Rather Than a Full-Day Photoshoot

One of the biggest differences with a natural approach is that the wedding day doesn’t feel dominated by the camera.

You won’t spend hours standing in awkward poses or constantly being pulled away from your guests. Instead, the focus is usually on letting the day happen naturally while quietly documenting everything as it happens.

Of course, there’s still guidance when needed. Family photos still get organised properly, and couple portraits still happen. But the overall experience feels much more relaxed and low-pressure!

A lot of my couples specifically tell me as their Cambridge wedding photographer, they want to actually enjoy their wedding day rather than feeling like they’re performing for it, and honestly, I completely get that.

The goal is always to help people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.

Genuine Moments Matter More Than Perfect Poses

Natural wedding photography is really about capturing people as they genuinely are.

Some of the best moments on a wedding day happen unexpectedly anyway. The emotional hug with your grandparents after the ceremony. Your friends crying laughing during speeches. Somebody absolutely ruining the dance floor by the evening.

Those moments can’t really be staged properly because they happen naturally.

That’s why a natural approach often means blending into the background more throughout the day and paying attention to the little moments happening between people rather than constantly directing everything.

The result is usually a gallery that feels much more personal and real to the couple rather than overly polished or posed.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose

Honestly, this is probably the biggest misconception couples have before their wedding.

People think they need to know how to stand, what to do with their hands, or how to suddenly become confident in front of a camera. You really don’t.

A Cambridge wedding photographer with a natural approach like me isn’t expecting couples to perform or model all day. Most couples I photograph are completely normal people who simply want natural photos where they look comfortable and like themselves.

The key is creating an environment where couples feel relaxed enough to stop overthinking the camera.

Usually, the best photos happen in-between the “official” moments anyway. Walking together between locations, chatting during drinks reception, laughing at something random, or just taking a breather together for five minutes.

Those moments always feel far more genuine than heavily posed images.

Your Wedding Day Won’t Constantly Be Interrupted

One thing couples often worry about is spending too much time away from guests for photos and video.

A natural approach usually means working around the flow of the day rather than constantly stopping it.

That doesn’t mean there’s no direction at all. There are still moments where some gentle guidance helps, especially during couple portraits. But overall, the experience tends to feel much more seamless and less intrusive.

This is also one of the reasons I really enjoy offering hybrid wedding photo and video coverage. Having one person capturing both naturally throughout the day means there’s less equipment, less interruption, and less of a production around you.

For couples planning relaxed weddings in Cambridge, this usually fits the atmosphere much better!

The Focus Stays on the Atmosphere of the Day

When couples look back at their wedding photos and videos years later, most aren’t looking for perfection.

They want to remember:

  • What the day felt like
  • Who was there
  • The reactions
  • The atmosphere
  • The energy of the room
  • The people they love together in one place

That’s really what a natural approach is trying to preserve. The emotional moments matter just as much as the big planned moments. Sometimes more.

The little interactions between family members. Guests chatting outside with drinks. The chaos of the dance floor later on. Those are often the photos people end up connecting with most.

You’ll Still Get Beautiful Couple Photos

A lot of couples hear “natural wedding photography” and worry it means they won’t get any nice portraits together. That definitely isn’t the case with me as a Cambridge wedding photographer!

Couple portraits still happen, but they’re usually approached in a much more relaxed and natural way. Rather than lots of stiff posing, it’s more about movement, conversation, and helping couples feel comfortable together.

I normally keep couple photos fairly simple and low-pressure so it doesn’t feel like a huge photoshoot in the middle of the wedding day.

And honestly, when couples are relaxed and just interacting naturally with each other, the photos always feel so much better anyway.

Natural Photography Works Especially Well for Relaxed Weddings

Cambridge weddings often naturally suit this style of photography really well.

A lot of venues around Cambridge have beautiful outdoor spaces, countryside settings, gardens, barns, and relaxed layouts where guests can properly settle into the day. That kind of atmosphere naturally creates better candid moments because people feel comfortable.

Relaxed weddings and natural photography really go hand in hand.

When couples aren’t worrying too much about perfection, guests relax too. People interact more naturally, the atmosphere feels calmer, and the photos reflect that.

Honestly, some of the best wedding galleries come from couples who simply focus on enjoying the day rather than thinking too much about the camera.

Reviews Often Mention the Experience as Much as the Photos

One thing I always really appreciate from past couples as a Cambridge wedding photographer is when they mention how relaxed and comfortable they felt throughout the day!

Because honestly, that’s just as important as the final photos themselves.

Most couples don’t spend every day in front of a camera, so feeling comfortable matters. A lot. Especially if you already feel slightly awkward about photos.

I always try to keep things friendly, calm, and straightforward so couples never feel pressured or overly directed. The feedback I get most often is that people felt far more relaxed than they expected to.

And usually, that’s exactly when the most genuine moments happen.

Your Wedding Should Still Feel Like Your Wedding

At the end of the day, your wedding shouldn’t feel like a styled shoot. It should feel like your wedding!

The best natural wedding photography captures the atmosphere, personalities, relationships, and moments that genuinely made the day yours. Not just how everything looked, but how it actually felt to be there.

That’s what makes those photos and videos meaningful years later.
